Harpies and Sirens

Picture
Birdlike creatures with human heads appear in mythology throughout the world. Among the most terrible are the Harpies of Ancient Greece. They torment humans by stealing their food and screeching so that their victims cannot eat or rest. It was said that the only thing they were frightened of was the sound made by a brass instrument.
Sirens look similar to Harpies, but Greek stories tell how they used their beautiful singing voices to lure sailors to their deaths on the rocks. In Russian mythology, they were known as Sirins, and were equally dangerous. Humans who heard their song left everything behind to fallow them, ultimately to their death.
